The 1959 television program "Home Run Derby" was one of the greatest spectacles in baseball history and it spawned offshoots that remain to this day. We watched this program on rerun as children in the 1980's and marveled at the powerful swing of Mantle and Mays, especially when they went head to head on the very first episode of the program. The show is a cult classic and it remains one of the most iconic television sports television programs of all time. The offered original contact print photograph is from the duel between Mantle and Mays and it shows the contestants posed around host Mark Scott at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles. Scott is pointing to camera while Mantle and Mays both smile while a few random technicians on the television show walk around behind the pair. A silver gelatin original that comes from the files of United Artists who owned the rights to the show by buying the company (Ziv Television) that produced it the previous year! Photo has a small code on the lower left that reads (HRD1-20) which means Home Run Derby episode 1 photograph number 20! This is the only known example of this photograph as it was owned by the studio that controlled the rights to the show and it is being offered here for the first time ever. Crystal clear and in perfect condition, this grades a perfect 10/10 and is perhaps the finest image of Mantle and Mays posed together that has ever been offered publicly!
